Chemical and economic investigation as well as process technology development towards the Hydrothermal Carbonisation (HTC) of biomass to coal
Several partners from industry and academia have aligned in this collaborative research project which is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Our common goal is the optimisation of the HTC-process via a thorough understanding of the relevant chemical reaction pathways. This will enable the consortium to build and operate a pilot facility for the Hydrothermal carbonisation of biomass in an efficient mode and with optimised process management.
This process of technology development will be supported by an integrated system analysis for a comprehensive assessment of the HTC in the entire energy system – on different levels, locally, nationally and globally. The life circle assessment (LCA) will ultimately determine the potential contribution to solving climate issues. It will also identify the economic costs and benefits of the concept.
